What Short Cycling Actually Means
A furnace is built to run a full cycle, usually ten to fifteen minutes or longer on a cold morning, then rest. When it quits after a few minutes and restarts, either a safety device is shutting it down or the thermostat is being fooled into thinking the house is warm. Neither one is normal wear. Short cycling burns through ignitions, wears the blower motor and heat exchanger, and leaves rooms uneven because warm air never reaches the far end of the ductwork. In older houses across the region with long basement duct runs, the back bedrooms feel it first. Left alone, a cheap fix often turns into a heating repair on a bigger part.
Cause One: Airflow, Starting With The Filter
The cheapest and most common cause is restricted airflow. A loaded filter starves the blower, heat builds up in the cabinet, and the high limit switch cuts the burners to protect the heat exchanger. The blower keeps running to cool things down, the switch resets, and the burners light again. That is the on and off rhythm you hear. Closed or blocked supply vents do the same thing, and so does a return grille pushed against furniture. Change the filter and open every vent in the house. If the pattern stops, you found it. If the filter was clean and it still cycles, the restriction is somewhere in the ductwork or the blower itself.
Cause Two: Thermostat Location And Wiring
A thermostat mounted where it gets warm fast will satisfy early and shut the furnace down. Sunlight through a window, a lamp underneath, a supply vent blowing on it, or a draft from an exterior wall can all do it. So can dying batteries, which cause odd behavior before the screen goes blank. Loose wire connections behind the thermostat produce the same stop and start. Check the batteries and the settings, make sure it is on Heat and the fan is set to Auto rather than On. Beyond that, the wiring and the anticipator settings are ours to handle, and mounting relocation is part of the heating repair conversation.
Cause Three: Flame Sensor, Ignition And Safety Switches
If the burners light and then go out after roughly five to ten seconds, that is a different pattern and usually points at the flame sensor or ignition system. A sensor coated in residue cannot prove the flame is there, so the control board shuts the gas off as designed. Pressure switches, rollout switches and blocked flue vents also stop a cycle early, and those exist because something in the combustion path is wrong. None of that is homeowner territory. Do not remove burner covers, disconnect gas lines or bypass a switch. If you smell gas at any point, leave the house first, call 911 or your gas utility from outside, then call us.
Cause Four: An Oversized Or Failing System
A furnace with more BTU output than the house needs will heat the air fast, satisfy the thermostat, and shut down before the structure warms up. You get short cycles all winter and cold spots that never resolve. That is a sizing problem, common when a system was replaced by matching the old nameplate instead of measuring the house. Failing control boards, weak blower motors and cracked heat exchangers also cause early shutdowns. A technician puts a manometer on the gas valve, checks temperature rise across the heat exchanger, tests static pressure in the duct, and reads the control board fault codes. That tells us whether this is a part, a duct fix, or a system that never fit the house.

Is it safe to keep using my furnace while it short cycles?
For a night or two in a hard freeze, usually. But if you smell gas, hear repeated ignition attempts, or a carbon monoxide alarm sounds, leave the house, call 911 or the gas utility, then call us for heating repair.
Could a dirty filter really cause this?
Yes, and it is the first thing we check. A clogged filter overheats the cabinet and trips the high limit switch, which cuts the burners mid cycle. Change it, open all vents, and see if the pattern clears.
My AC did the same thing last summer. Is it related?
It can be. Both systems share the blower and the ductwork, so a restriction or a badly placed thermostat causes short cycling in heating and in cooling. If you needed air conditioning repair for it too, mention that when you call.
