What a dual-fuel repair actually involves
A dual-fuel system has to decide, hour by hour, whether the heat pump or the furnace should carry the load. Most of our repair work is on that decision and the wiring behind it. We trace the control signals between thermostat, outdoor unit and furnace board, check the outdoor sensor the switchover depends on, and confirm the balance point is set where it belongs for your winters. Sometimes the fix is a failed relay. Sometimes a previous install left the staging wired wrong from day one.
What we check on the visit
We start at the thermostat, since a dual-fuel setup needs the right configuration to know it has two heat sources. From there we read the outdoor temperature sensor, test the reversing valve and defrost board, check refrigerant performance in heating mode, and watch the furnace ignite on a call for backup heat. We inspect the flue and heat exchanger while we are at the furnace. Then we run the system through a switchover and confirm the handoff happens cleanly, without both stages fighting.[]
How we decide repair is the right call
We look at which half of the system is failing and how old it is. A control board, sensor or relay problem is straightforward and worth fixing, even on an older pairing. A compressor that has lost capacity while the furnace is still sound is a different conversation, and we will lay out both paths with what each one gets you. If the heat pump and furnace were never matched properly, we say so plainly rather than repairing around the mismatch every winter.

Why does my furnace run when it is not that cold out?
Usually the balance point or outdoor sensor is off, so the system calls for gas heat too early. We check the sensor reading against actual outdoor temperature and correct the switchover setting at the thermostat.
Can I use a standard thermostat with a dual-fuel system?
No. Dual-fuel needs a thermostat that understands two heat sources and can stage between them. Standard heat pump thermostats often run both at once, which wastes gas and shortens equipment life.
I smell gas near the furnace. What do I do?
Leave the building right away, get everyone out, and call 911 or your gas utility from outside. Do not touch switches or the thermostat. Once the utility clears the property, call us and we will inspect the furnace.
How it works
- Step 1
Tell us the symptom
Call or fill in the quote form. We ask what changed, when it started, and what the thermostat reads. That short conversation tells us whether you need a visit today or tomorrow morning.
- Step 2
We diagnose on site
A technician checks the thermostat, the electrical side, airflow through the filter and ducts, and the equipment itself. We find the actual cause instead of swapping parts and hoping the noise goes away.
- Step 3
You decide before we work
We explain what failed, what the repair involves, and what we would do if it were our own house. Nothing gets replaced until you say go. Then we test the system before leaving.

Why homeowners call us
- Old houses and new onesWe are used to century-old homes with retrofitted ductwork and 1970s subdivisions with original returns. Tight crawl spaces, low basement headroom and odd attic runs are normal parts of the day for us, not surprises that stall the job.
- Built for the swingsHumid summers push AC systems hard and January freezes expose weak igniters and cracked flues. We repair for both extremes across the region, so the fix holds when the weather turns instead of failing the first hard week.
- Air conditioning and heating bothAir conditioner repair in July, heating repair in January, and the IAQ and airflow problems that hide in between. One crew that knows how your cooling and heating share the same blower and the same duct system.
- Plain talk, no pressureWe tell you when a repair makes sense and when replacement is the honest answer. No scare tactics about your BTU load, no upsell scripts. You get the condition of the system and a clear next step.
- All major brands, gas & electricEvery major HVAC brand, gas and electric, handled by an independent crew.
- Straight answersIf a system is not worth repairing, we say so, often right on the phone.
